Its just an edition
E36 is the previous edition of 3 series BMW's

E39 is the previous edition of 5 series BMW's

E30's are 2 generations ago 3 series

etc etc etc... they are just random numbers... i'm sure E stands for something in german, but that is unkown to me at this juncture.

i think it is some production number, easier than saying, 1999-present 3 series
