Unhappy high fuel comsuption for 98 323i

I just got a 98 e46 323i with 48K km milage.
The car is in very good condition for it's year but he fuel consumption is very high.
60 Liter can only run for 370km !
Every time I accelerate, the fuel consumption garage flicks to 20L per 1000km.
But the rev does go up too much.
While I stop the car, some smell of fuel coming out under the bonnet.

Can anyone gives me some idea, what can goes wrong.

Many thanks

Vincent

smell of fuel BAD. injector seals can leak onto the manifold, or some fuel line is seeping.

your consumption is ok for spirited driving: all the euro and us govntm consumption figures have no relation to reality. they are good though at comparing different cars.

thanks for your reply peter.

Since I just brought this car two weeks ago, most of the time i drive it very gingerly.
I guess it won't be cheap to fix if something wrong with fuelling system.
I'm going to a garage this Saturday.
Some sleepless nights ahead!

Thanks again.

dont stress. if you feel manly, take off the plastic cover, and start sniffing around. it could be something very simple.

p.s. my gauge is usually pegged. i get about 17 liters per 100 km in town. that is average fuel consumption, not just the silly meter thing...

That`s right! I also get around 17 liters/100km,because I drive mostly in the city perimeters (3km to work and 3km back from work). On highway ,when I drive no more than 110km/h ,I get much below 8 liters/100km. so I think it is normal for these cars to be in that bracket of fuel consumption.

Thumbs up 98 323i

I got my 98/323i fixed.

the fuel leak was caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator (only around US$70 to replace).

I also changed the following.
- spark plugs
- air filter
- fuel filter
- transmission oil
- engine oil
- rear brake pad
- cabin filter
- battery

fuel consumption is slightly better as I do more highway driving.

e46 is such a joy to drive !

cheers
