Yes, it is possible to have AE's with HID's. They are separate from one another. Most aftermarket AE's are CCFL or LED technology. OEM is halogen which is the dull yellowish color that comes stock from BMW. HID upgrades are fairly common as well. I bought my HID's from Bimmian and they've worked really well.
