Need some advice...my car just broke down infront of my house. There's a terrible sound coming from the front part of the engine. Sounds like fan belt or maybe timing belt. (i'm terrible at engines so excuse my ignorance)

can someone tell me what it sounds like when your timing belt or fan belt go?

I can say that when the timing belt goes, you don't hear anything, the car will just stall. If a fan belt goes, I am not sure it could make much of any sound...I would suggest getting under the hood and taking a look.

look for anything missing, like a belt...u would see grooved wheels if it were broken., and maybe the belt

the whole E46 range is chian driven no timing belts, most likely if you have an M52/54 engine it's the water pump.
