Help.. I put my 328i in the maintenance shop for its semi-annual general clean-up and repair, and the mechanic told me that I need a new BMW timing belt and BMW timing chain, since the ones on my sedan were faulty.. do I really need to replace them though?

Unless you have an M20 engine you don't have a timing belt and the timing chain is good for the life of the engine. I can see it being possible that the engine drive belts for the A/C compressor, waterpump ect. being bad.
