Guillotine in my tailpipe!!!

Howdy!!!

Ok, here is an easy question. I think...

I have a stock exhaust on my 2002 330i Sport/Prem.

Inside of the right exhaust pipe there is a valve in there with a cable attached to it. It looks like the cable is designed to open/close the valve.

I have never seen it closed.

What would be the purpose of closing off the exhaust? To help the catalytic converter warm up?

Someone please enlighten me.

It should close when you are doing some sporty pedal all the way down acceleration. The wierd thing is, my friends e36 has one closed when it is parked. The smaller exit promotes low end torque and then will open up in the hugher end i beleiev. Just another one of bmw's beautiful hidden treasures.
