since the 323 is the low model, some ppl would fully load them since the 323 is cheaper than the 328 at the time. Yet some may be real cheap and buy the cheapest bmw and not equip them.
A few things you may 'want':
*Sport package - def a bonus. You get sport suspension, sport seats, larger rims..etc. You can def find out by just looking at the seats; if they have huge side bolsters and thigh adjustments, then it has SP
*This is my opinion, but make sure you get the new style steering wheel w/ round airbag. I had the triangle one when I first got my car and it was a challenge for me to convert that to the round/M3 thick wheel. *DEF a gooood future mod.
*An alarm is a good bonus, some bmws do not come with alarms, like mine, i had to buy mine 2 years after i got my car.
*And also, just make sure everything works: AC, heat, radio, speakers, power seats, seat warmers, lights, cabin lights, etc.

In either case, it's probably worth taking to a reputable mechanic and paying him $50 (1 hour shop charge) to check out the big stuff...
