I hooked it up to the low pressure port and it said the psi was around 40. I tried topping it off and after holding the button down the pressure only got lower and lower. Now the pressure is around 35.
Don't worry about the guage. Turn on the car. Turn on the ac and put it on the full setting. Hook up the hose and continually shake the can until it is empty. Wear gloves because the can will get very cold. Afterwards, drive the car with the air on and it should work. Are you sure that you have a car the takes r134a? If it is pre-1994 it will use freon.
You are seriously better of going to an air-con service station, as they take out all the old stuff, then the system is cleaned and re-filled with r134a & oil, leak tested and pressure tested.
Here in the UK, you can buy the same can as you have for £38.00 or go to a service station and get it done properly for £45.00. So for an extra £7.00 its worth it.

I stepped in a plate of Pasta the other day - now I have to worry about my Carbonara footprint!

To Bad no one will touch it I said no leak sealer.... Leaksealer = replace whole system before anyone will touch it.... Unless you have the proper training you shouldn't touch the A/C system..... Yes the pressure dropping on th LOW side is good..... The Higher you can get the Highside and the lower you can get the low side the better the lowside should be 25-35 psi and the high side should be 200+psi.
