Engine smoked...I think

Basicaly I was on the mountain road uphill in traffic for an hour and then smoke started coming out from under the hood. I thought it was the clutch so I let it cool off and drove back. There now seems to be no problems besides a tiny hint of the same smell when it was burning. A friend said could be clutch his dad said could be electrical. I must say clutch was recently replaced so that's new. And it is leaking oil a bit from somewhere. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas what might have happened. The smoke was coming from under the back of the engine on drivers side. Thanks.

maybe a gasket is starting to go?

i know mine does that, my valve cover gasket is leaking real bad...

I looked at it, it smelled like the clutch.... but then again this car is COATED wtith everything as it is all leaking.... cleaned all the gunk off now I'm waiting to see what leaks on it....

Hmm..Didn't think of that...It would cause it smoke too right? It doesn't smoke now tho...But a friend did say it smelled a little like oil and little like breaks or clutch. I know it couldn't be breaks i was crawling uphill 1/2 mph. But I guess I should check that...or ask him to lol he knows more about car fixing then i...Hear that!! I know youre on this forum! Show thyself! lol

EDIT: Oh wow...speaking of the devil. lol. No offense just thought I'd check what others think. So you think it's not gasket?

It seems fine. There is a faint smell of something burning when I start it though. The same smell from when it smoked. But it goes away after I start driving. I had some problems with Aircon before I think it was a bearing somewhere but it was fixed....twice. I say that cuz the smell vanishes completely after i shut off the vent. Oh and AC line blew up....quite litiraly....in my friends face while changing radiator. But yeah runs fine now. what seal/gasket might it be? Where should and what should I look for?

Well, since I can't smell it, I will guess it is oil leaking onto your exhaust manifold. Doesn't take much of a leak to smoke and smell. The angle of your car on the mountain may have exacerbated the problem. Most common problem is a valve cover gasket (easy DIY, $40 part). The smell WILL come in through your vents in certain situations. Ask me how I know.

^ It is on the other side of the engine though.... it is the driver side rear of the engine Indicating it was the clutch not a gasket.... Also the reason it dissapears when you change the vent is because it nolonger sucking air from the Cowl under the hood it sucks it from inside the vehicle.

well let's hopefully for $$$ sake that it's a simple valve cover gasket or something like that.

well it'll still drive, so you didn't completely destroy it, right?

The only reason I don't think it is the clutch is because it would have stopped smelling by now. Something is getting on engine and burning off for it to still be smelling every day.

smell is gone now. I also noticed clutch seemed a little softer and slugish for about a day after that. It's back to normal. Gripping well and not slipping. And trust me I know when it slips. I drove for a month with slipping clutch. Best time of my life really. Give it gas and watch RPM fly up and car not move....awesome really...Gotta sell it soon and get a 318...I saw a real nice 318....convertable black....sweeeeeet car. Lol. Yeah I know IMPRACTICAL....but fun...

Hey you said its cheaper. Its the lowest e36 just cuz its slutty its more? Bloody Gold diggers...I liked how I couldn't get it INTO gear while on freeway and rolled from enterance of one to the exit of another in Neutrual.
