Easy question? - red light on dashboard!

I just bought a 2001 320d but don't have the user manual and am somewhat concerned by a red light that has just appeared on the dash!

On the left hand side of the main display there is an outline picture of a car that normally indicates if the boot or one of the doors is open. Just to the top left of this there now appears a red picture of a headlamp.

Any ideas?!!

its telling you have a bulb burned out check all bulbs on that side were the light is lit up once you find the bulb replace it with the same wattage and problem should be solved

correct. i just had that problem with my right front blinker light. replaced it and the warning light went away.

Thanks guys - found the offending light! I now just need to work out how to change it without resorting to my local rip-off garage

It's the front right dipped light - i.e. the side lights work and the main-beam works, it's the mid-range one that's gone on that side.

What I guess would be really good is (a) a good online store where I can buy the bulb at a reasonable price and (B) a pointer to a tutorial or similar with step-by-step instructions for changing it.

By the way, a bit of background on me - after around 10 years of deliberating whether it was worth the money or not, a few weeks ago I finally plucked up the courage to buy my first BMW - and I am thrilled with it
...why I waited so long I'll never know, but I think I'm hooked for life already...

(note: front right means nearside for me as it's a French car)

not exactly sure but if its the high beam the socket should be reachable by hand twist off and remove bulb. If its the side light turn signal blinker you need to open hood then insert flat head screw drive in the fender there should be a hole there push down then the light assembly will come out. try your local auto part store first.
