This seems to be a simple setup:

Any thoughts guys? I was thinking supercharger, but the thought of a turbo sounds saucy! : :

you know with a little ingenuity, pipe bender, and a good understanding of the fuel system you can make your own turbo setup for 2 grand. Finding the intercooler will be the hardest part

your best bet would be get a s/c the driveability and refinded power would still be there, as well as a 2 year warrenty that youd get from ess (best s/c kits)...but jon, i think you should get that 330i performance package...now THATS saucy! btw, the turbo kit is the same price as the ess s/c kit i think

It's also the same turbo system that Jim Powell is running on his ///M3/4 I believe.

their header design is really inefficient. the output should be in the center of the header to maximize pressure to the turbo. My guess is that this turbo kit is horribly laggy. I'd have to see a dyno chart to tell you guys anything for sure.

wierd how the torque doesn't peak until 4k RPM on the 11PSI curve, see what I mean about the header being inefficient???
If their most aggressive boost level is 11PSI, then they're using the wrong turbo. They should be using a straight T3 (or maybe even smaller) and use the extra money to upgrade to a ball bearing turbo and have a much more broad torque curve. That and they could benefit from more experienced ECU tuning. This hit and miss stuff isn't exactly confidence inspiring. It's a big part of why they make more peak torque on the 7PSI curve than the 11PSI curve. My guess is that the dip on the 11PSI curve isn't ignition related, I bet it's a knock from the fuel curve leaning out.

just my $.02

There's potential to really own the BMW market, they just need to put together a better package. If I were them, I'd get a more efficient header, smaller intercooler (11PSI doesn't require much intercooling and large intercoolers contribute hugely to boost lag) smaller ball bearing turbo, a knock sensing ignition retard system and get a more experienced tuner to dyno tune the ECU.

You have the best $.02 around here on matters of the almighty turbo. Who would you say is the most experienced tuner for the ECU, AA?

honestly, I'd say that Flyin Miata is the most qualified tuner for the ECU. They squeeze 300+ wheel HP out of the miata's 1.8L motor with roughly the same size turbine as is used by Mech Tech (Flyin Miata uses a ball bearing turbo and a MUCH more efficient exhaust manifold) Their kit replaces the Miata ECU with a programmable Link ECU that automatically adjusts fuel and ignition curves to compensate for altitude changes, humidity, etc. Their pre-programmed boost target/fuel/ignition curves are so good that adding their ECU to a stock non- turbo motor will net 40HP.

The Flyin Miata FMII turbo kit costs a little more than the Mech Tech kit, but they sell like hotcakes. They are so good that Mazda put Flyin Miata kits on every single one of their show cars last year...

John, do you know the guys at mech tech? any idea if there is a specific reason for the header design they use? I'm wondering if it's an issue with fitting the turbo under the engine...
