They say the 325 doesn't have enough power. 330 is too expensive for the comparo (their opinion)

Discuss.

The problem with BMW is that they cornered themselves in the whole price thing with the 330 and the M3. More power for the 330 would cause a decrease in M3 sales. In my opinion they should boost up the 330ci's power to 260 HP

These mag tests just take the cake.

Comparos like those are fine if you are in the market for a coffee-maker. But with a car there are so many other fine details like fun factor, everyday driveability, etc. which never gets put into the mix.

I bought my yr 2000 5-Speed 323Ci brand new for about $27,500 and I know you couldn't get the G cars for that cheap. Its just that now, the Euro's strength is killing BMW in the price department, so of course that can be used to the Japanese manufacturers' advantage in comparing the G against the 325 instead of the 330. The 330 is really the car it should go up against and C&D knows it.

I agree, the whole article is laced with catches aimed at preventling letters like the one I was about to write (that the 330 should have been used instead). I think they just got tired of having the BMW win and receiving all the complaints, it's been giving them a bad rep. Anyone that's experienced in those cars can read between the lines.

Id take a G35 over a 325i any day of the week. But yes... it should go against a 330ci.

Definitely, it should go against 330ci... but lets go further, C&D should compare it w/ the new 330ci w/ performance package...
Better yet, I go against G35... with my bimmer (330i w/ ZHP)...

I agree, the 330i would have been a better opponent. However, the title of the article was 'Comparison Test - $35,000 Sport Sedans. Sure the 330i base price is around 35K, but a new, loaded up 330 with similar options as the G35 is no where near 35K, especially one with the Performance Package (what are those loaded up - around 45K?).

I think that G35 looks as silly with a wing as an E46

I don't have the mag on me but if I remember correctly the Jag was somewhere around 39k, and another car was 29 or 30. Definetely a big enough spread to weasel in a 330; they just didnt' want to weasel.

The lowest 'price as tested' was the Lexus at almost 32K.

About 2 or 3 issues from now, I'm sure there will be plenty of letters to the editor from angry BMW owners regarding this comparison - maybe the editor will explain further.

Oh I'm sure the letters will come in, I just don't think they'll publish any except maybe one that's like "Thank you, you finally stopped taking bribes"

I've been getting the mag since 01 and i've read at least a dozen of those
