I had an E36 316i which I owned from new and did 170k trouble free miles in and sold to a friend. He has used it ever since and loves it. Never had more than just BMW services and a new exhuast at 110k miles. I had an E46 318i I sold to my father which as done 90k and feels as perfect as my old 316. BMWs never seem to age if looked after correctly. My E46 330i has 60k on the clock now and still drives like a new car. I had a 120d (very impressive by the way) whilst mine was in having a scratch taken out, and it has showed me just how perfect and new my E46 feels...
i do not think there is much difference e36 vs e46. motors and transmissions (manual) last forever, in excess of 100k easy.
rubber parts, RADIATORS can go at around 60-80 k. e36 can rust, e46 likely never will.
due to cost, i would not keep any bmw beyond the fantastic 4 year warranty, unless for emotional reasons. any little thing these days is thousands of dollars, and just not make sense, as the value of the car steadily goes down... no way to win. used
if you're handy around the garage and a DIY kinda person, there's nothing financially threatening about a BMW. my E46 is easier to work on than my old Honda.

I hadn't heard that one yet, however I do have 170,000 miles on E46 (99' 323i) and the only thing major I had to replace was the water pump a year ago and the thermostat housing two months ago. Other than that she still purr's like a kitten in the show room, I just regret not buying a Bra for road trips.
Well I am just looking to buy a 2001 320ci with 108k miles on the clock, it's like new. So long as you keep the service schedule and have work done properly, the idea is that you are always driving a car in new condition as anything which is worn will be replaced.

I cant believe this, the exact same situation. 99 323 170k+ only water pump and therm had to be replaced rough about 1 1/2 to 2yrs ago. I regreted not getting a bra, but someone barely bumped the front bumper and the insuranec company replaced it but I went and bought a bra immediatly.
