E46 Convertible Smg Or Aut

My wife wants to get a convertible and I have steered her towards the 330ci as we have a child which makes the Z4 really impractical. I have a couple of questions. First she needs to have a auto/smg gearbox. Is the E46 SMG the same as in the Z4 or is it the one fom the M3? Any experience with this SMG?

Second, is the performance package worth it or should a stick with just the sports package? Remember this would be with the automatic as the SMG is only offered with the sports package. used

Teach her the manual tranny. Recent Car and Driver (?) totally dissed the smg in their long term road test. ZHP adds about 10hp and some cosmetics.
