E/m Shifting....don't Understand

Wondering if anyone can assist. I have a 525i 1991...in my book, it should be an E34 M50(correct me if I'm wrong), just learning the BMW jargon lol

so anyways, the car's automatic, however i don;t know how to use the E/S, I know when I put is on E, it means economy, so I just leave it on Drive(D) and go on.
How can I use the M shift on this thing?

Although my car is a new 330CIC the steptronic trans is probably the same.
In E, or Drive the trans does it all for you and pretty softly. Move the gear lever to the left and the trans enters Sport or manual mode. Here the trans shifts for you at higher rpms and quicker. To go to full manual control from this poistion just move the gear lever forward to up shift and click it back to downshift.
