My pops just got a 2000 323i sport wagon. I have a 87 325is, do they use the same block? What is the difference between the 323i and the 325i made today? Thanks

Welcome :wave

those 2.5L's are completely different. your 323 has DOHC 24v and double vanos (dual valve timing), and the e30 has 12v and a sohc. your 87 has a 2.5L M20, and in 91 bmw introduced the 24valve M50. from 93-95 the M50's had single vanos, in 96 the M50 was altered and became the M52, still the same engine design, but was stroked to 2.8L's to create the 328 and both the 328 and 323 used obd-2 compared to obd-1 found in the earlier M50, and used alluminum blocks (which saved 51lbs). from 96-98 the M52 had single vanos aswell, but in 99 (beginning of e46) they came with double vanos. in 2001 the M54's came out and is the current engine of the new 325's and 330's, and still use the 24v design which started on the M50
