Coolant Light and Level

Started up my 2001 330CI leaving for work this morning and the coolant light came on but went off after about 10 seconds, never to come on again rest of the day or the return trip home. Engine always runs normal temp, no smells, etc. So just for grins I checked the coolant level after the car had been sitting all day and that red float was all the way down in the spout and the column looked bone dry. The car has 90k miles, and about 15k miles ago I had the water pump and belts all changed as well as the coolant changed out.

Any advice? Should I run to the dealer, or just top it off myself? I haven't noticed any leaks either.

Thanks!

If it is gone, it is leaking. The dealer will just top it off and tell you it is normal to lose some, but you have a leak somewhere. I'd get it taken care of now.

Okay, how soon do I need to get to the dealer? So if I don't see any coolant in the spout there, does that mean I'm really low like no coolant in the tank? Or am I okay to drive a few days?

So if I have a leak will I see puddles on the ground? Or does it only leak going down the road when the engine is running hard?

You should get the proper coolant from BMW or get it online. You can use distilled water for small top offs.

Small leaks can be hard to detect, especially if they find there way to a hot part of the engine or tranny and evaporate quickly.

Is there a brand I can buy from Pepboys or AutoZone?

Good to know. I just did a quick search for a picture. Where do you get your coolant? I'll be doing a flush soon. Ironically, my wife took the car down to the dealer several thousand ago to tell them the coolant level was low, and they just filled the reservoir. I know I have something going on there, too.

My cap was too loose and the coolant was coming out, you might want to check that.

I went ahead and followed the advice on some other threads about topping off the coolant with some distilled water. It took about 2 and 1/2 cups (1 cup being 8 fl. oz.) to get it back to max. Do you guys think I'll be okay with that solution? I'll be sure to check the coolant level over the next week to see if I'm down any.

Cheers!
