I have a 2002 BMW 330i Sport and Premium. I have the M68 style wheels that came with Continental ContiSportContacts.
I believe that they are ContiSportContact(1) not the newer ContiSportContact2's.
According to the TireRack website and Continental's website, the CSC1's had a treadware rating of 160. The CSC2's had a treadware rating of 280.
My tires have treadware rating of 280 imprinted on the sidewall, but the tread looks like the CSC1's and the writing on the sidewall says ContiSportContact with no numeral after it.
So what is the deal with the different treadware rating? Did Continental used to make CSC1's with a treadware rating of 280? used
Thanks for any input.

The contisportcontact 2's are 280 and the contisportcontacts are 160. The 2's are maximum performance summer tire. The others are ultra high performance.

ExTech,
I agree with you on the treadware ratings. 280 for the CSC2 and 160 for the CSC1.
But, what I am saying is that the tread on my tires looks like the CSC1. Also the sidewalls don't say ContiSportContact2 on them. But I am not sure if the CSC2 do have a 2 on the sidewall.
I wrote to Continental to see what they had to say.
Maybe they are CSC2's but they don't look like it.

Hi all,
OK. Here is the latest email from the Continental folks. This is their explanation.
Dear Joe,
The Continental ContiSportContacts(1) were indeed made with treadwear
ratings of 160 and 280. However, BMW specifications for their 3Series
are 280. So the ContiSportContacts(1)that are equipped on your BMW should
have the 280 treadwear rating. If you would like to be completely
certain that the tires on your vehicle are the ContiSportContact(1)please
visit our website to locate an authorized Continental tire dealer that can
inspect the sidewall of your tire for verification.
Thank you
So I guess the lesson here is make sure if you order the CSC(1) that you specify the BMW OEM so that you get the 280 rating.
