I've always thought that the Conforti Shark had the most aggressive reprogramming. However, on a recent post in this forum, I was directed to the Powerchip website, which listed some pretty impressive hp and torque gains for the E46. What is the general opinion about this?

don't always believe their posted numbers...
However, the M5 guys swear by powerchips.. and being that powerchips focuses soley on ecu tuning *MAY* indicate a better product, since that's what they do.. whereas other tuners do just avout everything..
apparently they're the only ones with 3/03+ software available... i don't know anyone that's gotten it yet.. many are afraid.. i think mainly befcause they list the stock 330i as have 235 hp stock, after Gold 91 increases to 244, and Gold 93 increase to 249..
well.. yea.. stock 330 is 225.. whereas ZHP is 235.. ..
strange thing is.. the gains for their new software is the same as with their old software.. coincidence? doubt it....
someone with a 540i wagon lost 2 hp after getting their software.. in the end he just got to keep it for free..
I'm tempted to call them and work a deal out.. to be the guinea pig for 03+ cars....something like if I pay for dyno's and such, send them the results, if they will give me discount on the software (or maybe free if I'm lucky!.. fat chance)
Let me add this... I told Powerchips personel that I couldn't afford it.... they asked if i was a member of a forum, if so, they wanted my name on it and with that information, they would reduce the price 5%. Still alot of money, but something... right?
I have no real affiliation with Powerchips. I do not work for them or are reimbursed by them for any promotional deals. I'm mearly conveying what experience I've had with thier customer support, wich is very good.

Dough I have a '99 328i sedan (automatic). Is yours a manual or automatic? Have your tried the powerchip in your car? Ive heard that you won't feel the gains as much in automatics as you will with manual cars.

I haven't tried it yet, i can't afford it, I was mearly passing on the information that I've recieved from Powerechip personel. In the spring time, I plan on gathering together some money for it.
To answer you question, No, unforunatly i do not have a manual. But to explain it better, the power loss from the transfer from flywheel to road is less with a manual hence the reasoning. Plus the addition of selecting your own shift points helps out alot too.
Last weekend I was going for a drive, really without thinking about it as i've done it all the time in my old 190E mercedes, i put the automatic selector in position 3. As a result, for the road I was travelling on and the average speed, I was better able to utilize the rpms and be in the range for optinum torque. My automatic acclerated like notihgn before. Now, dont' get me wrong here, I'm not sure if that's the best thing that can be done while driving, though it did give the car a better response on curvy roads, just incase you were going for that aspect. The chip, supposedly would add another 11hp, i think. It''s just be that much more enjoyable to drive.

Sure, you'll be able to feel a difference for the first couple accelerations...that is up until the car re-learns it's learning curve and says that's enough of this...and basically puts you back to "stock" run conditions. Good luck though.
