Check Engine Soon Shows Faulty VANOS - BMW Forum

2003 325i with 44,900 miles and the Check Engine Soon check out by local BMW Service shows "Faulty VANOS Unit DME FC28B6, 28BA, 28B8 VANOS adjustment unit improper function". Here' s my question: How reliable is the dual vanos on this model? How often will this be a problem? every 20K miles?
I purchased an extended warranty to cover 3 years 36K and the car had 36K miles on it when purchased. Oil change was performed by BMW dealer 600 miles before this light came on. I find it hard to believe the VANOS would be bad already with this mileage. thoughts?

Thanks ! I've been finding information regarding a Dr VANOS repairs you can obtain and do yourself on google. Back in the day, I might have been ready to dive into this myself with the right tools, and I might still do so if I find the warranty doesn't cover this problem. Dealer quoted $1200 repair (parts/labor)
