Check Engine Light, P1421, P1423

Hey all,

My check engine light came on shortly after the first part of the day, and I retrieved codes P1421 and P1423, Manufacturer Controlled Auxiliary Emission Controls Bank 1 and Bank 2, respectively. I was wondering if anyone knew or could shed some light on what this could be? I reset the code, and it stayed off the entire time the car was warm. The next day, the same thing happened. It has no effect on performance, other than a slightly unstable RPM during the first 30 sec. of running.

Is the Secondary Air Pump hangin' off the right shock tower about to kick the bucket or what? Or....maybe it already did...

Not many people seem to know what these codes really mean, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like secondary air faults alright. The secondary air pump is hangin off the right shock tower like you said...when the car is cold pop the hood and have a friend start the car, listen for the air pump (it will be obvious if it runs or not) If it does not, check the relay before replacing (it's behind the glove box)! If it does run check the hoses for build up (they tend to get clogged with carbon) If all else fails the Secondary Air Pump is a quick easy swap (and fairly common) good luck!

FYI, quick and easy swap, but not the cheapest. It's recommended you replace the valve along with the pump... ~$350 for both.
