Chattering Windshield Wiper

Ride is an '03 330Ci. With wiper setting on delay or slow speed passenger
side wiper chatters/shudders across the windshield. On high speed setting
it appears to function ok. Dealer has changed the wiper arm once and
wiper inserts twice but the problem refuses to go away. Have cleaned the
windshield six ways from Sunday with everything imaginable. Anyone out
there with a suggestion or solution?

I believe I have seen what you are talking about ... on a windshild that was cracked. I replaced the cracked windshield and the problem went away.

I assume this isn't your problem considering the dealer should have picked up on this.

this is usually caused also by a slightly bent wiper arm. almost impossible to get it back woithout byuing a new arm. try getting a new wiper blade from bmw, if it doesn't fic the probelm it is time for a new arm.

The wiper blade has to be perpendicular to the glass or else it will chatter. Check closly to see which way the rubber edge is leaning on the glass... then pull the arm away from the windshield and apply a little pressure in bending the arm one way or the other to get it straight on the glass surface. I probably have to correct this about twice a year.

i destroyed mine by starting the wipers when there was a crapload of ice in the windscreen.

Sounds reasonable....I assume the arm would have to be at the 12 o'clock position in
order to do this. Will give it a try and report back after the next rain which will probably be Mon. or Tues.

like bobkat said, when we fix chattering wiper blades at the garage, usually if it isnt the blade itself , than it tends to be the arm all twisted, and not perpendicular to the glass. try using some vice grips and try twisting either the one way or the other. it should help fix the problem.

Here's the procedure to align the wiper blade on the glass so it does't chatter. For the driver's side stand along side car facing the windshield. Pull the wiper arm towards you so that it's standing up. Now move the wiper blade away from arm so that it is horizontal. Now with light pressure twist the arm to the right or left and then check to see that the rubber edge is perfectly perpendicular on the glass.The rubber part of the blade needs to flip both ways as the wipers go back and forth.
