Car shutting off while driving?

I own a 2002 325Ci with about 66K miles on it. The other day, I was on the freeway in stop and go traffic and was going under 15 miles and my car all of a sudden shut off.

The Check Engine Light, Electrical, and oil symbols came up, and then everything shut off. I pulled to the side of the road and turned off the car, and then started it again, and everything was fine. I am worried because this could be a major safety issue.

I have read the articles in the forums and people are saying it could be a fuel pump problem. If so, does the fuel pump fail intermittently? Also, this is not the first time that my car shut off while driving. Another time I was making a left turn and it also did the same thing.

Can anyone help with this problem? What should I do to prevent this from happening again? Could it be a problem with the battery, spark plugs, etc.?
Or is it most likely a faulty fuel pump? Thanks!

It can be so many things its almost impossible to guess. try having the codes read to see if there may be a clue there.

was it a sudden cut of power? Or did you notice interior lights dimming at first? When my alternator went out.. same thing happended... car died, but all of the dash lights came on... sat for a few seconds car cranked back up (granted it died again a minute later)

My car used to have some idle problems and would randomly shut off while I was driving. The fix for me was to replace the CAM sensor.
