can you help identify this strange rumbling/vibration?

hey everyone,

i have a 2002 manual e46 325is with 90k and i am having a certain problem with it that is going to be hard to explain because its not exactly reproducible, and i know its going to be even harder to help understand it on a blog post...

the car has a rumble, or a stutter- a vibration that does not feel normal.
sometimes it feels like i'm driving over a thousand hoses.

when i cruise at low speed the ride is smooth. and when i gun it, sometimes it gets the rumble of a thousand hoses... this especially seems to happen if i accelerate in too low a gear. it seems to happen between 2500 and 3000 rpms... in a lower gear the vibration is way worse, but it seems to rumble even in 5th gear going 80 - its just much more subtle.

usually after the rumble happens i can smell a burning rubber smell when i get out of the car.

the problem seems to be getting worse, though i think its been going on for almost a year. i've only had the car for a year, but i don't remember if it was always there...

about two months ago i got the flex disk, drive belts, and the control arm bushings replaced...

a few weeks ago i got new tires and breaks at a different shop... they witnessed the rumbling but couldn't identify it.

when i first bought the car, there was a problem with the fuel mix, and the way the computer was telling it to inject fuel. i think it was a little too rich.

i'm going to try to replicate the rumble/vibration/stutter so i can video it and put it up here to better describe the problem.

in the meantime, if you guys have any ideas i'd like to look them over.

thanks a lot

Check motor mounts first. If it is not the mm's it could be exhaust or any of the engine accessories; fan, power steering pump, etc. Any competent indy shop should be able it id the problem fairly quickly.
