a/c blowing cold only on left vents

Yes, it is hot this weekend in Sacramento and a good time to turn up the AC. I noticed that only the driver side vents blow cold air. The passenger side vents blow ambient/hot air.

Any idea where to start looking?

Does the car have separate climate controls for each side? I'd have to wonder if there's an issue with the ducts on the dash.

no, it only has one climate control for the whole cabin

I've actually heard about this a lot with e46's. From what I understand the driver side always blows a little colder...I know mine does.

I've read that you just need to get the R-134 refilled and that should fix your problem.

Strange, why would BMW design it that way...

Yea I've heard is something to do with the location of the compressor?

This exact problem has now happened to me two summers in a row. Last summer I took it to the dealer, they said nothing was wrong, but they did top off the refrigerant and that fixed it.
Can I do this myself? I'd really like to avoid a trip in to the mechanic.
