Buying Advice: 2000-2002 3 series

Guys I'm in the market for another vehicle; my budget is tight and I'm looking at 2000-2002 3 series vehicles. There's a reputable used car dealer in town that specializes in this type. The cars are higher mileage ones (80000-90000) but are extraordinarily clean inside and out. I know clean doesn't = good shape mechanically but any car that age without a lot of obvious cosmetic wear has probably been decently cared for.

I know a used car is a gamble, but I'm not familiar with 'newer' 3's - I have a '90 E30. Is picking up a used one with this mileage just a bad idea period? Are there some very specific things I should check for first? The thing that stinks is that no prior maintenance records are available on any of them.

Thanks.
