Bmw E46 Rear Noise When Engaging Clutch And Gears 1 & 2 - BMW Forum

Hi Guys

i have a BMW E46 2000 model , i have a problem with it, when i engage gear 1 and gear 2 or take off at low speed there is clunking noise which comes from the rear wheels, particularly the left rear passenger side. Even just stepping on the clutch when stationery a clunking noise comes from the rear passenger`s side, does anyone know what this could be, i appreciate your help. The noise is not wheel bearings definately,as it happens when changing gears, or when stationary if you press the clutch

I went with my BMW to an independent specialist who said there was no problem with it, they checked the diff and rear wheel drive components and said the noise is normal all Bmw 3 series do it later on and i have to live with it. i dont trust that, surely the car shouldnt make rear noise when you engage gears, drive over speed bumps or potholes, it makes some humming noise the same like that of a blown exhaust, what worries me is the car make this noise from the rear wheels, even when stationery and you engage gear you hear a humming noise, the car drives fine other than that, has anyone ever experienced this and did they manage to solve it ? please help

the clunking noise is most likely the rear differential mount. i had the same problem on my bimmer.

E46 rear end frame bushing faulty ,i think is recall,idk

Hi!

I'm new in this forum and i was looking answer to my question on internet and found this place. Have you got answer to your problem? I have same problem, when i put 1st gear in when standing rear axle will make "pump" noise, when i press clutch pedal it sometimes makes same noise. I have repaired my rear frame problem and welded it so it can not be the problem. I my self am suspicious about rear U-Joint, as it makes little kicking noise when i turn drive shaft little bit.
Please help me as i have run out of ideas
