BMW Dreams, Maxima realities.

I just turned 21 and landed my first real job. I have wanted a BMW since I was like 7. Right now i drive a crapped out 96 Maxima that sucks, so it's time for a new car.

Anyway which of these two would yall suggest. Or is 80k to many miles to buy a used one.

Welcome to the Werkz.

Start as you would with any potential car, check out the service and accident history, if it makes it past that point, pay a BMW specialist shop to check it out more thoroughly, it could be the best money you spend especially if you don't end up buying the car because of some underlying issue/s. Don't feel pressure to buy the first car you find.

Good luck and enjoy your time here.

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

First and foremost as Brettski said, get a Carfax of the vehicle your looking at and if serious always always always get a mechanical pre purchase inspection done.

You provided ads for a Coupe and a Sedan which are totally different. The choice of Coupe or Sedan is totally yours. However I am The4DoorWhore so I only ever buy Sedans. If your used to the 4 doors of the Maxima I would stick with the sedan. The one you posted looks to be in really good shape inside and out. It is something I would go an look at (however I dont like silver). The M54 engine inside the E46 is very durable and robust and 80k is nothing for these engines. I have 262,000k on my M52 engine and its still going strong. As with any car the maintence history is important so make sure you ask for that. If the seller cant provide it then I would be learly.

One nice feature with the E46 is all of the vehicles information is stored in the key. If they owner claims it has been dealer serviced its whole life then you can take the key to the dealer and scan it, pulling up the entire vehicle service history.

Thanks, that key thing is a nice feature. I was probably going to go with a sedan anyway because of insurance cost. It's good to hear that 80k isnt much for these cars and yeah it does look good from the pictures. Any particular thing I should look for ?. There is a really good bmw mechanic around here Truett Ray's Shade Tree Garage that I will definitely get to look it over before buying anything.

The E46 had two main issues:

Rear Subframe - On the 1999-2002 Models had weak subframe sheet metal. This lead to numerous vehicles having the subframe ripped out. This was very expensive to fix. For the 2003 model year they fixed this problem and all 2003.5/04/05 models are unnaffected. When looking at a 1999-2002 model ensure that the subframe re-enforcement has been completed properly and obtain the documentation for it.

Cooling System - Numerous components in the cooling system were made of plastic. Over time and with heat plastic becomes brittle, cracks and fails. This lead to numerous models overheating. Their are upgraded components that are much better then stock (waterpump, thermostat cover, expansion tank, etc) and a full overhaul can usually be done for $500. Ask for service records to see what has been done.

Begin as you would with any prospective car, examine out the assistance and incident record, if it creates it's previous factor, pay a BMW professional store to examine it out more thoroughly, it could be the best cash you invest especially if you don't end up purchasing the car because of some actual issue/s.
