Bluetooth Phone And Bmw Assist

I have a new 2004 325i that comes with the BMW Assist (paid by BMW for the first year). From what I have read, you cannot connect a Bluetooth phone to the car and run it through the pre-wired set up without disconnecting the BMW Assist module. So you can't have both apparently. Has anyone been able to have both operational at the same time? Other question is what type of phone is operational in the car if not a Bluetooth phone?
