New 2005 330 CIC has BMW Assist (naturally) but also is supposed to be bluetooth capable.

Pressing the button on the steering wheel brings up an ACTIVATE PHONE message on the radio display. Problem is I can't seem to figure out how to activate the phone.

Does anyone know the secret combination to do this?

It may be bluetooth capable w/o bluetooth installed. Its a separate package. Check to see if you have a pairing button near the hinge under the armrest between the front driver and passenger seat.

2005 models don't have a pairign button as I understand it. They are always in pairing mode. Just read your phone manual to find out how to connect devices to it.

Yes, I asked.....all 2005s have BlueTooth capability with BMW Assistance...we got a 2005 Z4 Convertible with BT today.

I duuno...maybe read the manual? OR watch the CD/DVD about your vehicles packaging/options...and how things function.

Once you pressed the button, your phone should be powered on already and make it discoverable. (find out how to do this in your owners maual of the phone. Once it is recognized by the car, it will ask for the PK* by your phone, input that into the phone and then the car will ask for the same code, input that as well.

Once that is done the radio display should the message "portable" and if you have a phone book in your phone it should download the book automatically. Refer to your BMW owner manual in the bluetooth section for other steps. If that still does not work get your salesman to work on it and make it work.

I came across this forum and thread because I am having the same problem with my new car.

There are apparently many older Bluetooth systems in earlier models. Not all of these have the same pairing procedure.

Some information had led me to a BMW produced manual for Bluetooth pairing (downloadable PDF.) This file details the procedures mentioned above, where you hold down a button while turning the car on. Like the original poster, I could not get the pairing message to appear on the screen. Then I noticed that the modification date on the PDF file was 2003 - it was apparently written for 2004 models.

The manuals supplied with the car are no help. The main owner's manual mentions phone usage, but specifically refers you to a separate document for BT pairing. This other document is NOT in the car. There is no mention of Bluetooth at all on the DVD or CD-ROM either.

After some looking around, I finally found the solution. While i have a 2005 525i, I cant' see why this wouldn't apply to any 2005 model with an iDrive (they all have it now, don't they?).

Turn the car on. Press down on iDrive controller button to get to "i" menu. Choose "Communication Settings" (at the bottom).

Here's the tricky part (the part the messed me up)....

You now have to move the controller "up" to get to the various choices under the "Communications Settings" menu. (This is my one beef with the iDrive. Often, when you enter a select an item from the menu, you are not at the "top level" - you are one level down, at the last sub menu area you visited. This makes it easy to forget there are other sub-menus in this area).

Among the "Communications Settings" submenus is a "Bluetooth" selection. Going to that area you have two sections. One turns Bluetooth on/off. The other puts you in pairing mode (although it is not called that on the screen.)

Once in this "pairing mode" you need to have your phone scan/look for devices. It will find a device named BMW with several numbers after that. Select that device.

Next, my phone asked me to enter a passkey #. After hearing about the "card" found in the glovebox, I spend several minutes searching. I don't have that card. Turns out you don't need it. I simply entered 4 digits on my phone followed by the "send" button. The iDrive screen then asked me for a passkey - I entered the same exact digits I entered on my phone.

Bing! The devices were paired.

I then shut off the car for a few minutes, reading somewhere that this was necessary. Not sure if it did anything, but figured it couldn't hurt. The phonebook didn't transfer (T637 phone) and I couldn't find any way to make it happen manually. However, then next morning when I started the car, my complete phonebook was available in the car. No idea when/how that happened, but it did.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the info.

My 2005 330 doesn't have iDrive so I'm not sure how to adapt your procedure. But I'm sure it will help someone.

Which bluetooth phone do you use?

Ok here is some info....

1) E46/E83/E85/E53 vehicles produced between 3/2004 and 8/2004, are equipped with a TCU that does not support Bluetooth.

2) Some models even though they have BMW assist with integrated Bluetooth will still need to be retrofit encoded at the dealership in order to work.

3) Here is the pairing procedure for e46,e53, e83 and e85

1. Turn Key off and then to accessory position.
2. The vehicle is ready for pairing for the first 2 minutes of key on.
3. "Activate Telephone" appears on the MID or Board Monitor.
4. During the pairing process, depending on equipment, the indicator lights on MID or Board Monitor display flash.
5. Your mobile phone should now be set to search for BT devices. See the Owner's Manual for your
handset.
6. A request to enter a password, PIN, or code appears on the handset display, depending on your
model. Enter the 'BLUETOOTH PASSKEY" (supplied with the vehicle literature), using the
numerical keys on the handset and confirm the input. Look for a confirmation message on the
handset.
7. To conclude the pairing process, turn the key off.
8. Wait approximately 30 seconds before turning the key back on. The phone will now be
connected when the key is turned on. It may take several minutes to initially load the phone book
stored in the handset depending on the number of entries.

Hope that helps,
DT

Ahh. My method will only work with the iDrive. The post following mine (from Dirty_Tool_ is probably what you need to do. Those consistent with how my dealer explained it it me (which is not the correct procedure for the 2005 5-series.)

I am using a SE T637 (Cingular). Works great so far. Complete integration.

My only problem is updating the address book. The first time the address book transferred, it did it by itself (no idea when, it just suddenly appeared). Now that my address book has changed on the phone, I am trying to figure out how to send those changes to the car. Doing a manual send from the phone only gives me a "not available" error message (on the phone.).

I found this link. http://members.roadfly.org/bmw_e46_m...ins/841304.pdf it's a great link on Bluetooth on the 2005 models.

Thanks,

Bluetooth compatible DOES NOT MEAN bluetooth installed.

Check to see if there is a pairing button--flip up armrest and look for a single button near the hinge. And, yes, the '05 330s do have a pairing button. I have a '05 330Ci and got Bluetooth installed by the dealer. I have a pairing button...

Works great, incidentally. I've used it with my old Motorola v710 phone and with my v3 Razr phone.

I don't think the 2005's that came with BMW Assist have a pairing button for BT. I think you only get it if it's dealer installed.
