| About 2 months ago I heard a grinding / humming sound coming from my front wheels whenever the wheel was turned and the car was cold. I sort of ignored the sound, because as the car warmed up (about 30secs later) the sound would go away.
Recently the sound got worse and I called the local BMW Service center to inquire about causes and was told that it could possibly be the Power Steering Fluid being low. I was also told that the E46 (2000 323i) uses the same fluid for power steering and automatic transmission - same overflow bottle under the hood also. When I checked the overflow container it was dry! Which means that I had been driving my car with little or no Automatic Transmission Fluid / Power Steering Fluid for aprox. 2 months.
The question is how much damage have I done to my transmission? Any advise on this? Also, I suspect there is a small leak, does anyone know the aprox. cost to repair such a leak...anyone experience this before?
Cheers. |
