My E46 (320d - 2003) starts to make annoying sound in cold weather after short ride.
Sound seems to come from heater/ac housing. Sound is like this http://www.geocities.com/eesoti/ra5.wav ,recorded near heater housing. used

Sound comes even if ac is shutdown.

I get that same exact sound. I've been wondering what it is, but when I took my car in to the dealer, as you would guess, it didn't make the sound... so they say.
Gee, that sound is obnactious....
Sounds, like something got loose and fan of the blower hitting something. Or, another possibility, something got in air duct and touching blower.
Have dealer fix it, it is still under worranty, isn't it?
This sound comes even fan of blower is not running. Something gets definitely loose in certain temperature. I'll take my car 4th time to dealer to fix this. Bit tired

this sounds like some plastic bits in the servos moving the air flaps. i think the car does this to shut/oipen the recirculation (eventhough the button is not pressed!).
i'd insist that they check this, i woudl not knwo how to get inside there to check myself....
