alarm system self install?

I called my BMW local and they quoted an alarm installation $460 for an entire work. I saw some previous threads mentioning about buying after-market alarm at cheap price and let BMW activated it for small charge. Has anyone ever done it yourself and how much should the total be. I have some knowledge and tools for typical mechanical works so is it worth it to do the whole thing myself. thanks in advance for any comments.

What is ideal is to buy the factory alarm and install it yourself and then just take it to the dealer after installing and have it encoded. The installation is fairly simple. The alarm will cost you roughly $130 (try pacific or crevier BMW online) and the dealer will charge you .5 to 1.0 hrs labor for the encoding.

Def do it yourself...youll save ATLEAST $100. Activation can sometimes be free.

Price depends on whether or not you have a convertible. USA convertibles don't have the motion sensors so the alarm is cheaper. You can get the Euro alarm for a vert, though from www.ultimatebmwparts.com.

If I had known about the motion sensors before I bought my alarm, I would have gotten them.
