Air Filter Replacement

I'm looking for advice on replacing the air filter in my 2006 325xi. My dealer wants $100 to do the job which seems ridiculous. I googles aftermarket replacement filters and they run from $50-90.

Any recommendations on a filter? Also, how do I reset the onboard service records so I don't keep seeing the service icon?

For my e46 I went with a Mann filter from Bavauto for $17. Changing the air filter in any car I've ever had is mind-numbingly easy. I would never pay someone to do it for me.

I don't know about the service light. Is there a service light dedicated to the air filter? I would think the service light is referencing a bunch of things that need to be serviced on a regular basis. You shouldn't really reset it until everything has been replaced/checked. In any case, I don't know how to reset it.

Thanks. I will look into that filter. I am not handy and have little time so I generally leave all maintenance to my local shop but I was expecting $20 not $100 to replace a filter. The dealer said the indicator was for the air filter per the normal change cycle. I think it popped up when we hit 50K miles.

I use a K & N in my 2000 323i...you don't have to replace it...may have to clean and re-oil it after 50K

My contact at Edmonton BMW advises against using the K&N or any 'oiled' air filter. I've heeded the advice and have been going with an alternative.

His concern is that the oil, if not properly used, will interfere with the O2 sensor.
