HELP my 3 series, yesterday I noticed that the temp gauge flew up and was stuck on the red, even though the red light that normally comes on if the car is over heating did not come on, I pulled over and checked under the bonnet and the car was no where near hot, as I drove off it was going from the middle to the red and then stayed in the middle so weird? I only drove the car for 5 mins for this to happen? and then this morning I started the car and it was reving its self up the the 20mpg also the little MPG gauge kept going up and down on its own, does anyone have any ideas what this can mean?
Might be a bad battery, if the voltage is down, BM's do strange things, get the battery checked out 1st, when you say it was reving its self do you mean just the gauge or the engine?

yeah the engine was reving, so weird, my husband washed it on the weekend with a pressure washer, I was thinking perhaps water could of got under the bonnet.
Strange!!! May have got some water in somewhere I suppose, Try the MAF or air flow sensor, might have some water in the connection block, located in the pipe from the air in take to the engine or may be some moisture in the fuse box under the hood,Also get the battery checked out.

Yeah we will check all what you have said.
I went on to another site earlier and some bloke said it could be todo with the computer controlled dash its called a cluster or something I'm hoping its not that as I can imagine it is very costly!
Thanks for you kind advice.

Cluster refers to the speedo, rev counter, dials as in its one piece, you may have a loose connection behind there, but that doesnt explain the reving bit.
