im losing my company car, so im getting ready to buy a 99 3series as my daily commuter car.

a used dealer friend has a few 323's with about 60k on them for around $14-15k. is that a good deal?

are there any problem areas i should look for when inspecting the vehicle?

im mechanically inclined, and i will be doing all maintenance myself, anything special i should know?

thanks for any help, hope to soon be a BMW owner!

sounds like a great deal to me... I'm not sure about problems with e46s but I'm sure the car is a good deal.

well for a base package with 60gs and a 4dr sedan, good body shape and mechanical shape it's worth about 16000 from dealer. so he might not be giving you that good of a deal. I bet you could find a newer 2000/2001 for around the same price...

Example.... my car

1999 328i, 4 door, automatic, 52,000miles (when purchased). After taxes and other stupid dealer shit, price came to just $20,000. Asking was like $18,500. Got her a year ago. For me, first thing that had to be fixed were the front brakes, they were so low that I was using the pad holder as a pad. Next was an Inspection II servicing where the control arm bushings were busted. Oil change done too. My car seems pretty solid. Be aware (cause this really annoyed me) the factory alarm is NOT a standard feature. Watch out for any electrical glitches, ie, windows come down a 1/4in when u open the door and up when you close. Rare, but happens.

When you test drive them, do it in the morning when it's really cold out. Don't have the dealer warm it up for you. With my car (didn't realize it as the dealer warmed her up) in an early morning drive, RPM's dropped to stall. It's an error in the DME, needing reprograming. Sometimes more complicated requiring a replacment of the Vanos control unit....$$$$$.

I think that's about it, that I could think of. Hope it helps.

Advice? Yup. If you're going to buy a 3-series, I recommend purchasing a fault-code reader from someplace like bavauto.com or turnermotorsports.com (or wherever you can get it cheaper). It'll cost about $150, but you can check the ECU for fault codes right there on the spot. Hey, you're gonna be doing your own maintenance anyways right? You'll need one of these puppies.

If you find any error codes, look 'em up and tell the guy you want a proportional discount. FYI, for each sensor that goes, you'll shell out about $100 in parts. And there are a LOT of sensors in my 3 series.

That price sounds damn good to me. I bought mine 9 months ago for $20,000. It is a 2000 323ci and it had 26,000 miles on it when I bought it. I already have 48,000 on it and I'm wondering how much I coould get for it now if I sold it?

Be careful of all the problems:

My e36 had the climate control & radio go out... Had to solder on stuff onto the circuit board to fix it (this is a very, very common problem http://www.gbnetwork.co.uk/bmw/clima...rolrepair.html and http://www.macadamizer.com/bmwfix.html for details)

My e46 just had its transmission go out with less than 80K on the odometer, and just 3 months after the warranty expired. BMW wouldn't do anything to help.

I've also had to get brake pads & rotors for both cars, and the e36 had to had new tires installed ($2200 CDN).

Be careful -- brakes, tires, rotors, even oil changes are extremely expensive. And god help you if your tranmission goes out or your climate control stops working.

You actually paid over $1700US for tires?! Or is that with rims AND tires? Holy shit if it's just the tires.

Say, what did your car do to make you realize your control arm bushings were out. I have a 99 323i and I am getting vibration while driving now and my friend thinks it is u joint but could it be control arm bushing? By the way. I am a car salesman and we took mine in on trade 8 months ago with 49000 miles on it. we only gave him $11,700 for it! I got it for $12,200. That guys was a great deal.

No offense, I hate car sales men... fucking middle men... jacking up the prices of cars... ghead

Anyway... Well... the main thing that I noticed was that when on the highway and slowing down for an exit, the car would jerk to one side. I had thought that it was from a worn pad (on one side???). I had the front brakes replaced, rotors and pads and the problem persisted. Came time for my Inspection II servicing. From that, the mechanic noted that the bushings were really messed up. After they were replaced, that jerking motion never happened again. I also experienced some VERY MINOR wheel vibration. Though that could be cause by a slightly warped rim. I don't have the equipment to accurately say though.

well hes offered me a black 99 323i 4door with most options (no navigation screen or cd changer), with 55k on it for $14.9......might be able to get down to $14.5........it appears to be in great shape visually.

i think i might go for it.

the other choice is a 00 or 01 2door with ~50k, but he wants $16 for that.
