yes that is the e36 chassis. e46 started in production in 98 but they wernt sold until 99. just like some 91 e36's. so e36 and e46 were mixed together.

Didn't appear to be an M, looks like a regular ol' 3 inside... cept for maybe the seats and steeringwheel. (don't rely on me though)
looks like my 98 323is (but my steering wheel has the color plastic roundel) Exterior looks JUST like a regular ol' 3 series. It's DEFINATELY an E36
Test drive it, if it appears to be fine and you like the power it has, Go for it. BMW's last for 250,000+ hard miles without any major failures if taken care of. I have a 4 speed auto and I'd like to know how the manuals drive.
Price is about right. I picked up my 98 323is auto with 76k miles on it for $15,000, looked at it (no idea my dad was taking me to 'F1 Imports') saw it, test drove it, and drove it home 45 minutes later. Never regreted it. (I wish it had a bit more power but who wouldn't want more? )
buy it, then take off that m decal, or, get an m bumper, either or, its just not right as is

u cud prob find an M3 OBDI 95 with about 120K miles on it on ebay for less than $15k. but of course dont buy it from ebay unless it is close by and u can test drive it first.
to make it look like an M3 ull need an M3 frnt bumper, side skirts, and rear bumper. but just get rid of te ///M symbol. it wud make u look like a poser.
