330 MODEL and SMG

Can anyone tell me the year BMW began offering SMG as an option in the 330? Is the SMG in the 3 series the same as in the M3? Operate the same way? Was the SMG part of the Perfromance package? Thanks

The SMG became available on the 2004 and 2005 3 Series. The SMG was not available with the performance package.

I don't know if the M3 and other 3 series shared the same SMG, but I do believe they operate the same way.

Thank you. Useful information. My son would like to find a 2003 or soo4 330 convertible with SMG. Might be a long search.
