2002 E46 330i Steptronic transmission - BMW Forum

I have a 2002 E46 330i Steptronic - when stopping car downshifts fine until it reaches first gear - which at that time make a hard downshift. If I put the car in neutral and stop or if I put the transmission into sports mode, I do not get this hard downshift.

I don't think this tranny was designed to be shifted into first gear unless u are at a complete stop.

At what speed does this hard downshift happen?

5-10 miles per hour - in another forum the concensus seems to be that I need to have the tranny reflashed, not sure what this entails or costs - will post a separate thread to this question

Had it fixed (transmission reflashed) at dealer for $147 incl taxes. Works like new.

i still don't think you should be shifting into first gear nless you are at a complete stop... you wreck your synchromesh...
