2002 325 Ci shook then died now won't start.

I did a search but couldn't find any articles related to my problem other than the general battery, fuel pump and spark plug answers. I think it may be possible for one of those to be a problem but if I could explain exactly what happened maybe I could get a more specific answer...

...I started the vehicle fine in the morning, again later on a job site...I drove to a meeting and when I tried starting it on the way out about 30 mins later it started but was shaking and idling a lil high. It stayed that way for about 5 mins then died. After that it would turn over, the power is on and all the lights, windows and radio work but it won't actually start. It sounds as if it wants to but it won't go any further than that. I let it sit over night and started it the next day thinking a warm starter solenoid may be a problem but of course, nothing.

Its currently at my local BMW shop and being diagnosed but it will be a few days before I hear back. If I could get some input here that would be appreciated.

Just a guess, but it might be worth looking into, maybe the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) Its my understanding that if it doesn't work, when you attempt to start the car it will crank but won't actually start up. I am not sure where it is on your engine, but on the E36s its in the front kind of underneath the thermostat housing, could be in a similar area on your car.

i just realized i posted as a 2002 when its an 04...regardless...turns out it is the fuel pump. I appreciate your response.

I will be replacing it myself and just wanted to know if any of you recommend any specific sites for brand new oem parts? I found AutoPartsWarehouse.com and they seem legit. Anyone have experience with them?

Np, My e36 had a bad fuel pump when i first got it, I bought my pump through Pelicanparts.com because it was from VDO, (an OEM for my model), FCeuro.com looks like a good place to get it from as well, i read some good reviews about them.

I don't know about the E46 models but make sure you check to see if your pump has two or one lines going to it, before you buy a replacement.

Make sure to also change your fuel filter. Pushing against a clogged filter will kill a pump. If
you saw your old pump and it had blown out the sides, the clogged filter was the cause.
