I have an aut trans, 320i 2002, when I am idling and take off it will make a knoking noise, if I take off gas it will decrease and when 3rd gear enters it will disapear and run normal, note that this does not happen durin shift down.
Please help
simple try adding some transmission Fluid if that doesnt help take it to a repair shop cause sounds like your tranny might be slipping. If it is then you need to get it replaced.
the knocking sound happens when I take off fast or half speed, if I take off moderatly it will not happen or it will be very light. if it is the tranny, can it be repaired with out major overhaul or replacment
that really depends on once they open it up and see what condition the gears are in but in most cases if they are going to have it open you might as well just replace them and that can be costly. There are some shops out there that repair them but more than likely you will be in the the shop again at or over a year. I would suggest finding a good shop to crack the case open and see how bad it is.
Im not a mechanic by far but I have replaced a few trannies in my street racing days.
I don't think it is the box itself... Is it an engine knock or suspension knock?
If engine, then it could be one or more of many things like Crank-bearings shot, CPS or even lifters!
Just a thought buddy...

last night I drove it in the autostick manual position and discovered that the knocking sound was much softer, and when I shifted through 2nd gear faster you could hardly feel the knocking sound. Really strange
