I am getting a sparingly used (25,000 miles) 2001 330i (with sports and premium package + xenon) for about $25,500. Do you think it is a good deal. If not, then how much should I be shelling out? How much should it cost if buying from a BMW dealer?

Any gotcha's in buying a used 330i from a direct seller? Anything that I need to watch out for? Any upcoming maintenance expenses such as oil change, brake pads etc. etc.? Has anyone encountered major or minor issues at 25-30,000 miles?

Welcome any suggestions that you might have. Thanking you in anitcipation.

Go to Edmunds to input the data on the car and see the average that it is currently going for in your area.

With 2001 model you might want to check the light steering. Some of the 2001 owners had the retrofit to the heavier steering done. See if it has the light or heavy steering and test it before completing the deal. If the steering is too light for you pass on it since trying to get bmwna to retrofit it would be wasted effort on your part.

At 30k it will be ready for service I maintenance. As with buying a used car it would be a smart move to check the maintenance record, and have it checked out by an independent shop to limit getting into trouble later on if it has current issues.

Here in Vancouver, I would check to see if it has a "declaration" on it for damage to it due to accident and theft, which will affect resale value down the pike. A friend of mine wanted to buy a 2002 540i until he discovered it had two "decs" on it; one for $7500 of damage and the other for $2500. The damage may not have been serious, but many won't buy a car with a "dec" of many thousands of dollars on it; this affects your trade in value latter when you get rid of the car.

I bought a 330i SP PP 46,000mi last spring for around $28,000 in Cleveland from a (non-BMW) dealer (lots of negotiation). Great car mostly, but it has or is having all the "usual" defects. The less miles the better as you have more warranty coverage. Don't be surprised, these are complex cars and BMW's aren't doing that well in reliability surveys, or initial resale. The later is why I buy used, as long as there is warranty coverage. My service experience has been very good, under warranty. I will probably try to sell, maybe trade for a another 330i, after warranty.
I do love the car's performance and features, its just more effort to love than I expected because of reliability.

Depends on what area you live, but generally speaking, it sounds like a good deal.

Keep in mind that all scheduled maintenance up to 36K miles is covered by BMW, so your inspection I which comes at 30K is covered.

Somebody mentioned the lightened steering - this is worth mentioning. Some 2001's have this lightened steering which came under fire by BMW owners and was corrected mid way through the 2001 MY production. If your car was built later in the year, it won't be impacted (not sure when the cut off was). As well, those affected were offered a retrofit - not sure if you can still get it, but you could ask your dealer. My 2001 was built in August and by that time, steering had been corrected.

Go for it - they are great cars!

did you mention May 2001? How "light" is the steering? Does the car feel or drive significantly different than the regular steering?

I honestly have not driven one with the 'lightened' steering, only read the complaints on various BMW forums. People have described it as having power steering x 3 if you know what I mean, whereas most people want tighter steering in a sporty car.

If you drove this 330 and it felt great to you, then it makes no difference really. Nothing is defective, or is going to break on you - just a different feel. Again, this only pertains to early 2001 vehicles.

Is that true? Isn't the warranty broken into some sort of 36,000 miles or 3 years type deal? Or is it separated between service and maintenance?

I got my 2001 330xi for 22,900. Course, they hosed me on my trade. Once I was hosed on the trade, it ended up costing me 28,000, which is still right at KBB.

I just purchased a 2001 330i with the same package as you for $28K. It had 34K miles on it. The only difference is that it is a certified pre-owned car. What that means is that the dealership gives it another 5/50,000 extended warranty on it. This gives me a bit more piece of mind of owning the 330i.

HTH's,

Joe

Hi!! How are you? Guys, are BMW's reliable cars? I mean I've heard a few complaints from you guys but I think overall, they're nice cars.

Please tell me if they're reliable or not.

Thanks.

Over all a relieable car, but if you get a "fully loaded"car with all the whistles and bells there is more to go wrong with the car. For example, there are more sensors on a Bimmer than a normal car, so it is more likely you might have to replace a sensor than on a normal car.
