2001 325 CiC - Trunk electric release not working - BMW Forum

Hi Gang,

Only way to get into the trunk now is via inserting the key in the lock and twisting. The fob button won't pop it (but all the rest of the fob functions work fine), nor will the interior button, and nor will the electrical release button on the trunk.

Any ideas? Common failure?

make sure it's not in valet mode. you can consult your owners manual but I believe valet mode is activated by locking/unlocking the glovebox. if thats not it then it may be a failed actuator in the trunk

Check to see if the wires have frayed in the harness that comes into the truck on the right side. Repair any broken or shorted connections (if any).

thats a good idea, that is a common failure. I think harness is on the driver's side though.

If I remember correctly, it is opposite to the E36. It is on the left on my E36

Thanks folks. No idea if my wife accidently put it into valet mode - will have to check that this evening. Have already been there with the trunk harness last year when one of the back up lights stopped working - had to have the harness repaired/replaced.

I'll poke around.

Usually the trunk latch/module PN 51-24-8-196-401 list is $45.50.
