2000 328i transmission question

the car sometimes shifts ok but then other times i can be cruising at 55mph and it will automatically downshift to 3d gear and go into safe mode where it stays in 3rd gear all the time. I've been to 2 seperate dealerships, the first found dealership found code 055 (i think means trans geat monitoring 5). anyways they said they did not have a fix for it in there tech bulletins and said that the trans fluid looked fine. well it worked for about two months perfect and then it started doing it again. i took it to another dealership and they found same code but found a tech bulletin that said it was a bad valve or something and it needed replace or if the fluid was bad the whole transmission needed replaced. well my fluid they said was bad and anyways now they cant fix that valve cause the don't rebuild transmissions anymore, they just replace them. anyways my question is, do you think a transmission flush might fix this problem or should i just replace the trans? sometimes i think i should try it and then other times i think its just a waste of $. sorry so long but wanted to get all the facts out there. thanks

Check this thread and this thread for more info. For later model auto transmissions, it's called a 50/50 shot that a fluid flush will solve the problem. It worked for me, but it might not work for everyone.
