2 Problems Noticed... - BMW Forum

Lately my car has been dropping in RPM while idle close to stalling. It usually idled a lil less than 1000 rpm, but sometimes dropped down to 500 RPM (yes i did say 500) or lower and the car begins to shake as if it is about to stall out. Another thing I noticed is that my fuel consumption rate is way up. I find that I have to fill up much more frequently now. Could this all be due to the need for a new clutch??

not clutch.

1. water in gas. try isopropanol based additive.
2. crappy gas. get new gas, add techron to make sure injectors are clean.
3. ecu screwing up.
4. vanos screwing up.
5. oxygen sensor going bad. 3 thru 5 should have codes.

M3Rider. My 2000 328i does the exact same
thing when the temps. outside gets cool or
cold. It does not do it in warm weather. When
I bought the car two years ago in May, there
was no indication of this during the summer
months. When it did act up, it was fall time.
I store my car and the few times I start it,
thats when the idle drops and increases for
about 5 minutes. On a few occasions, it acually
stalled. When I re-start it everything seems
fine.

. It could be a temp or air flow
sensor.

My '04 325i does this exact same thing. When it's cold outside it will drop down to 500 RPM idle and the car shakes for a second then goes back to a normal idle. I'll prob mention it the next time I take it in to have them check the things peter mentions above.

hey guys i have the same thing happening with my 99 e46 328i and my buddy had the same problem with his, but he removed that stupid little vaccum pump that pumps air into your exhaust. When the pump actuates it pumps air into your exhaust when the car is cold, b/c the car is telling it it isnt getting enough air(emissions he said) so when that does it, it kills the car to about 500 rpms, then comes back to normal idle. The car will do so until the temp gauge is where it should be at normal engine temp

sounds to me like an air leak.....probably near the MAF sensor....

i bet it is that simple.....

just move some pipes and listen for an air leak.....

i had the same thing on my 04 330Cic. took it to the dealer...numerous times without any success. Finally convinced, they removed my system computer and sent it to be serviced in Germany....this took about 2 weeks but the problem was fixed. keep in mind that my car was still under warranty, i bet they would charge a fortune for this....good luck

Did you scan for fault codes? it could be a simple thing like idle stabilization valve , but assuming in this case is no good aproach to the problem.

I had a similar problem, and it seems that adding techron has made the issue a little better. I always fill with 92-93 octane at chevron, but had to go to to a few other places a few times. Anyway, try doing two runs of Techron, and see if that helps you out at all.
