YELLOW SPROCKET GEARLIGHT CAME ON

I'M NEW HERE I HAVE A 1992 325I THAT I BOUGHT A MONTH AGO AND JUST TODAY AS I WAS DRIVING A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ALSO AT AFTER THAT TURNED OFF A YELLOW LIGHT THAT LOOK LIKE A SPROCKET CAME ON THAT HAD A ! IN THE MIDDLE. FOLLOWED BY A ROTTEN EGG SMELL CAME ON DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. HELP THIS IS MY FIRST BMW.

ok I did not put them on backwards I bought the car just like it is. What about the tranny? what does it mean?

Is this a reoccuring thing? Is the light staying on or does it shut off after a while? How many miles do you have on the car? IF you have an auto, it may need to be rebuilt depending on the mileage. Have the code read by a local BMW tech, as this will give you a lot more info as to the problem (code48= Solenoid valve, code40=pressure regulator, etc.)

The sulphur smell is undoubtedly a catalytic converter. If it goes away, let it slide, a new cat is not cheap. If it gets consistent, well, that sucks, er stinks.

Are you seeing any problems with your tranny? Like tonight my light came on for the first time with the same warning and my car won't go out of third and it's having a real hard time just moving... I think it might be stuck in third... but anways, more details man. I'd take it to your local bmw shop...

I need a damn tranny!! give me one! lol... I'm going to buy that 1500 one and I have a friend who used to work at the dealership for 8 years install it.. he's going to do it for a case of beer and a pack of smokes lol...so I'll be cruising with a 5 speed shortly... I'm hoping this will make my car jump off the damn line now...

Make sure you get the manual differential. Otherwise your top speed will be like 90 mph and you'll cruise at 5k at 60 mph.

Did you buy it from a dealer? Any warranty on it?
Did you get the owner's manual with it?
Prolly should pick one up so you will be able to look up the codes/icons.
