That's really high. My car tops out at 230km/h (138mph) and it's modified. When my car was stock I did about 210km/h (126mph)
I wasn't even aware that the E36 speedo went up to 160mph. The 318's top speed is limited by aerodynamics (duh), so you'll see that when you hit the top speed, you still have another 1000-1500RPM before you hit the rev limiter.
Are you using the correct ratio for tires? Even at such high speeds the speedo shouldn't be off by that much.

I believe he was just saying that the speedometer actually lists 160. I don't think his needle ever got anywhere near that point!(I know my 318is never did!)
To do list:
Suspension--- researching
UUC System U TDM- 3/05
M50 manifold converstion 3/05
off to the tuning shop for custom software 4/05
Cams/lightened flywheel, throttlebody........ well lets see what happens

Correct me if I'm wrong.

But he was asking about top speed not what's the highest number on his speedo. Anyways, if he misworded his question and was wondering why his speedo goes to 160, it doesn't mean anything. You could slap 300km/h on a Geo metro and it wouldn't mean a thing.

i don't really remember what my car got up to stock (1997 318i), but ive gotten it up to about 140, just a bit under if i remember correctly. but that is only with air intake and exhaust for the engine parts. but yah when that happens i have about 1000 rpms left, that is annoying. There is no way it will get to 160 thats for sure but i bet if the limiter was off it could make it to about 150.
i know this is a bit off topic, but autotechnica, do you know any companies that make chips or software for a 1997 318i?

At 140 the speedo is usually off. When I hit 138 I was using a GPS to track the speed, so it's quite accurate. At that speed I already had my Dinan chip installed with the top speed governer removed. When it hits that 138 (230km/h) it won't go higher, it's limited by aerodynamics/engine, not the computer.
Not sure who makes software for the 318. You could try TMS or Dinan? No idea, sorry I couldn't help.
