windshield cracked

windshield had a 3 inch crack....no clue how it got there....2 days later...it became 6 inches....i went to bmw...there windshield cost $314 plus tax.....i went to an auto glass place and they sed $140 including tax and labor....but ofcourse its not the bmw made one....i guess its aftermarket or custom....do you think this would be safe to do?....has anyone done this?....can anyone recommend a place in the NY area

I would worry about the price difference. TRUE, it won't have BMW inscribed on the glass, but as long as the glass looks clear and is the same thickness, it shouldn't be a problem. Make sure there is no warps in the glass, in other words, make sure that the glass doens't show warped images in some areas. You should be golden.

have you checked any salvage yards for the glass? Most will sell them for under 100.

i checked about 7 or 8 junk yards....none had it......the guy that said $140 asked me if my window had a rain sensor....i wasnt sure....does it?
its a 94' 325i 4 door

I just had mine replaced. i looked into it, and found that a bmw windshield is over $500 not including installation. THe best deal I could find around here was $256 installed it was like $280 sumthing after tax. Everyone else not useing BMW windshield wanted $500 installed and with BMW windshield they were talking about $750 ish. It was insane. If the place looks reputable I'd say go for it. Just drive by it during the next few dats and look at the kinda cars he's working on. Also if you know good mechanic in the area that you trust then ask him if he knows anything about them. that sounds like a good price to me.....

aftermarket auto glass aren't bad at all.... it just lack the 'high' of having the bmw oem tag with it.

glasses break or crack on on a certain degree of impact whether oem or not.

I'd realy inspect their work and what they are currently working on right now before I'd make the choise. Can't go wrong with BMW though, all your looking at is the price.

got it fixed....cost $140.....just like new....no problems...here is a pic during the install
