Has anyone come across the following problem ( on an 1993 320i E36 ):
The drivers side window goes up and down in spurts.
It does go all the way up and all the way down, but you have to keep pressing/lifting/pressing on the window switch for this to happen.
BMW Service want like £100 just to open and diagnose the problem - NOT Fix; so it would be annoying if the problem was something small to fix.
basically the exact same problem i had except i have a 93 318is. At first the button was not working. Then i got a new window switch and it only moved the window down in intervals like yours but you have a 4 door. Well finally brought it to a bmw mechanic doing it as a side job and sure enough it was the window motor. There are window motors with computers on them and without. I needed the one with which was $240 i think with a discount from the guy at the dealership i know, without ran for about $180. probably could find one on eBay though. Another thing you might want to try that he told me to reset the window with the computer on them is bring it all the way down then all the way up and hold it there for about a minute. If that doesnt reset it then you are in for buying a new window motor.
lol. my window will go up and down, etc. I don't know why it does that. is that the same problem you are having. it seems to do it only in the cold. my car wont lock by alarm.. i have to do it manually. ill be driving and the it will go up and down and its annoying, are you talking about the same thing i am?
My situation is exactly as gonzonick describes; the window just goes up and down but in intervals. Its been like that for ages, (winter and summer) ; i just havent bothered getting it fixed due to the potential cost. But it sounds a new window motor will resolve it.

This problem is apparently very, very common. A new window motor did do it for me, for the other window the problem just went away on its own...
Check this out I too have a window problem with the driver side only, but a little different from what you guys have mentioned. It will go down smoothly but when I have the window go up it seems like it wont go up perfectly straight up. One end doesn't go up in line and it jerks down/up. This broke my motor(?) twice. I've gotten it replaced twice and now to prevent it from breaking again the way I roll up my windows is in 2 inch increments. Pretty sad if you ask me.

Yup, exactly the same issue here ( well almost ), the issue is only drivers side. The window does not go up perfectly straight, I have to nudge it back at each interval to make sure it doesnt end up outside the rubber seal. Though mine has the same problem going down aswell as up.
