I'm having trouble finding performance parts for a 1996 325is. I'm assuming its because this is OBD-II. Is it due to emissions laws? I plan on buying and modifying a e36, and the one I'm looking at is a '96, should I steer clear of these? How hard/costly is the OBD-I conversion?

I thought in 96 they were called 328 and not 325. Is that why you are having problems finding parts for that car? I own a 96 328is and to my knowledge, 96 was the first year of the 328 and OBD2.
You can convert the OBD-II 2.8 to OBD-I and see dramatic gains in power
If you want to do that, talk to jlphan.
